General
- What is Envirothon?
- The Colorado Envirothon is an environmental education program and competition for high school students. It focuses on natural resource conservation and management, including Wildlife, Forestry, Aquatic Biology, Soils, Land Use, and an annually changing current issue topic. See About Us for more!
- Who can participate in Colorado Envirothon?
- High school students from Colorado are eligible to participate in teams, typically consisting of five students and an advisor. Please see the Rules and Regulations page for more information.
Competition
- When is the event date?
- Typically, it is the first week of March. The 2026 competition will be held on March 2-3, 2026, at the CSU Spur Complex.
- What are the rules for this competition?
- Feel free to go to the “Colorado State Competition” tab, then “Competition and Registration“. The Colorado Envirothon Rules and Regulations are available there.
- What are the topics covered in this competition?
- Colorado Envirothon covers the following topics: Wildlife, Forestry, Aquatic Biology, Soils, Land Use, and an annually changing current issue.
- How does this competition work?
- Participating teams compete with a presentation that provides solutions to the competition’s current environmental issue (Day 1) and a series of hands-on written tests based on the topics of Colorado Envirothon (Day 2)
- What is the Current Issue for this year’s competition?
- The Current Issue topic changes annually. Participants, teachers, and advisors can check the website (approximately in the fall) or contact the Colorado Envirothon team for the most recent information.
- How are teams scored in the competition?
- Teams are evaluated on their written tests (number correct) and their Oral Presentation. Please see the Oral Presentation page for more details and the rubrics used.
- When are resources available to teams to prepare for the competition?
- Most resources are available year-round; however, updated resources on the current issue, which changes annually, will be provided once the Colorado Envirothon Planning Committee receives the year’s theme from the National Envirothon team. Please go to the Student & Advisor Resource page for access to this year’s resources and more!
- What do teams win?
- The winning teams will receive exciting prizes, including partner-related swag, valuable information, and other exclusive items. They will also have the opportunity to represent the state of Colorado at the national competition at the end of July.
Registration & Participation
- How can I register a team for Colorado Envirothon?
- Teachers and advisors can complete a Team Registration form or contact the Colorado Envirothon team for more information.
- What is the team registration cost?
- Team registration cost is $500. Check whether there is a conservation district in your area, or contact Carissa Whittington at carissa.whittington@state.co.us to find the one closest to you. The conservation district may be able to cover all or part of the registration costs!
